Warm Winter Sun for Jazz Trio is an exploration into the world of jazz–drawing from inspiration from the world of jazz, classical, and popular music. Visually, the piece embodies the picture of a winter morning where snow is blanketing every surface as the sun reflects on the snowflakes falling. With the head representing the stable, stagnant snow that rests upon the surfaces while the solos represent the snowflakes falling and being manipulated by the outside elements. The performers are given ample independence in order to support a “free”-ish atmosphere.
The improvisational experience of the piece is often seen as a conventional element of jazz and one I have longed to explore outside of “classical” music. Without a clear order or pattern, one would expect consistent uncertainty, and yet the simultaneous experience and musicality of the musicians create a unique, collaborative dance of sound.
